I happen to have come across an issue with mac mini's where the HDMI doesn't provide a signal to the monitor.
A workaround that has worked well so far (in the case of 2012 models) is to buy a thunderbolt 2 > HDMI adaptor and use it instead of the built in HDMI port of the mac. These are relatively cheap and widely available online.
